Major Theme: The consistent, multi-faceted doctrine of eternal security through the writings of the Apostle Paul.
Scripture Foundation: Romans 8:38-39, Ephesians 1:13-14, 2 Timothy 1:12, Romans 5:1.
One of the greatest mistakes a student of the Bible can make is “proof-texting”—pulling a single verse out of context to support a personal theory. However, when we look at the writings of the Apostle Paul, we find that the security of the believer is not a one-off comment; it is a consistent, legal, and spiritual reality woven throughout his epistles. Here are four distinct ways Paul proves that salvation is a “know-so” reality.
1. The Persuasion of a Settled Mind
In Romans 8:38-39, Paul writes: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life… shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The word “persuaded” here is far stronger than a simple opinion. In the KJV context, it means to be fully convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt. Paul isn’t crossing his fingers; he has examined the evidence of Christ’s resurrection and reached a final, unshakable conclusion: nothing can break the bond between the believer and God.
2. The Seal and the Earnest
In Ephesians 1:13-14, we see the legal side of our security: “In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance…”
When you believed, God placed His “seal” upon you. In the ancient world, a seal signified ownership and authenticity; it was a crime for anyone but the owner to break it. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is called the “earnest.” In legal and banking terms, an earnest is a down payment that serves as a guarantee that the full amount will be paid. God has given you His Spirit as a “deposit” to prove He will finish what He started.
3. The Safe Deposit
Paul uses banking language again in 2 Timothy 1:12: “…for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”
The word “committed” refers to a deposit put into a safe place. Paul viewed his soul as a deposit he had handed over to God. The reason he was certain of his salvation wasn’t because he was a “good keeper” of his soul, but because he knew God was “able to keep” it. Our security depends on the strength of the Bank (God), not the merit of the depositor.
4. The Present Possession of Peace
Finally, in Romans 5:1, Paul states: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Notice the word “have.” It is present tense. Salvation is not a future reward we might get if we stay the course; it is a present possession. If you are justified by faith, the war between you and God is over. You possess that peace right now, regardless of your feelings, because the legal case against you has been settled at the Cross.
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6
