In a world full of complex religions and endless “to-do” lists, the message of the Bible stands out for its startling simplicity. While men often try to make the way to God difficult, the New Testament presents a path so clear that even a child can understand it. This is what the Apostle Paul called “the simplicity that is in Christ.”
The Problem: Our Sinful Condition
The reason the Gospel must be simple is that we are incapable of performing complex spiritual feats. The Bible is clear that every human being has fallen short of God’s perfect standard, and the consequence of that failure is death.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23, KJV)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, KJV)
The Solution: The Gospel
The Gospel isn’t a list of things for you to DO; it is a message about what has already been DONE. Paul defines the complete Gospel as the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins.
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel… how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, KJV)
When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He paid the full price for our sins. His burial proved the reality of His death, and His physical resurrection proved His victory over sin and death. In our world, a ‘down payment’ is just a start—it’s a promise to pay the rest later through our own ongoing effort. But Jesus didn’t just provide a deposit on our salvation that we are responsible for finishing through good works or religious rituals. Instead, He paid the debt in full, covering every sin you have ever committed and every sin you will ever commit in the future. There is no remaining balance for you to settle; salvation is not a task you must complete, but a finished sacrifice that you simply receive by faith.
The Requirement: Only Believe
If the work is finished, what is left for us? The Bible’s answer is consistently simple: Believe. Faith isn’t a “work” we perform; it is simply the hand that reaches out to receive the free gift that God is offering based on the finished work of His Son.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV)
When the Philippian jailer asked the most important question in history—“What must I do to be saved?”—the answer was direct and simple:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31, KJV)
Conclusion
The simplicity of the Gospel is that Jesus did the hard part—the dying and the rising—so that we could have the free part. You don’t have to be a theologian or a perfect person to be saved. You simply have to trust in the One who died for your sins and rose again. It really is that simple. If this makes sense to you, take a few moments and in your mind believe that Jesus Christ did this for you. If you do, you are saved, and are now a child of God with eternal life!
