Who is Jesus?

Throughout history, people have held many different views about Jesus. Some saw Him as a great teacher or a moral philosopher, while others viewed Him as a revolutionary or a prophet. Many in His own day were confused by His origin and authority, wondering if He was Elias, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. However, to understand His true identity, we must look to the Scriptures, particularly the Gospel of John, which provides a profound theological foundation for who He is from eternity past.

1. He is the Word

Jesus is the eternal expression of God’s mind, heart, and character. John 1:1 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This title, “The Word” (Logos), signifies that He is the means by which God communicates Himself to the universe. He is not a created thought, but the eternal communicator who existed before time began, perfectly distinct in personhood yet perfectly one in essence with the Father.

This identity as the Word is further confirmed in the book of Revelation, where His ultimate authority is revealed. Revelation 19:13 describes Him in His glory: “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.” By being the Word, He brings the invisible God into the realm of human understanding, making the divine nature tangible to us through His incarnation and truth.

2. He is God

Jesus is not merely a god-like figure or a highly exalted man; He is divine in His very nature. John 1:1 explicitly declares, “the Word was God.” This is the cornerstone of Christian faith—that the Son is co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. He possesses all the attributes of deity, including omniscience, omnipotence, and immutability, which He displayed throughout His earthly ministry while remaining fully God even in His humanity.

This deity is confirmed by the Father Himself in the book of Hebrews. Hebrews 1:8 records the Father saying to the Son, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” Furthermore, 1 John 5:20 reinforces this truth, stating that “we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.”

3. He is the Creator of All Things

Nothing in the entire cosmos exists that was not brought into being by Him. John 1:3 tells us, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” This establishes Jesus as the active agent of creation, the one who spoke the stars into existence and formed the foundations of the earth. His power over nature during His ministry was a direct reflection of His role as the Architect of the universe.

The apostle Paul further expands on this creative power in his letter to the Colossians. Colossians 1:16 explains, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.” He is not only the source of creation but also its ultimate purpose and goal.

4. He is the Source of Eternal Life

Life itself resides in Him as its primary source. John 1:4 says, “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” This life is not merely biological existence, but “Zoe”—the divine, uncreated life of God that He shares with those who believe. Because He has life in Himself, He has the authority to grant that life to a world dead in trespasses and sins.

Jesus later confirms this exclusive role in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” This is supported by the testimony of 1 John 5:11-12, which states, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”

5. He is the Light of the World

Jesus provides the spiritual illumination necessary to navigate a world darkened by sin and ignorance. John 1:9 refers to Him as “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” As light, He exposes the truth, reveals the path to God, and dispels the shadows of death. Without Him, the human soul remains in a state of spiritual blindness, unable to see the glory of God.

In John 8:12, He explicitly claims this title: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This is echoed in the prophecy of Isaiah 9:2, which says, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”

6. He is the Savior of the World

He came into the world with a specific mission: to take away the sin that separates humanity from their Creator. John 1:29 records John the Baptist’s powerful declaration: “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” By identifying Him as the “Lamb,” John pointed to the sacrificial system of the Old Testament, indicating that Jesus would be the ultimate sacrifice to pay the debt of sin once and for all. This salvation is not a distant possibility but a present reality for those who respond to Him.

John 1:12 provides the bridge between His work as Savior and our personal experience: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” This invitation is universal, as 1 John 4:14 testifies, “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.” Furthermore, Acts 4:12 declares the exclusivity of His salvation: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
