5 facts about God

God is not distant or unknowable. He has revealed Himself through His creation, His Word, and His saving work. These five truths help us understand who God is, what He has done, and what He promises to do for those who trust in Him.

1. God created us

Human life is not the result of chance. God created mankind in His own image and gave us life, dignity, and purpose. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

The Lord is the giver and sustainer of life. “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves” (Psalm 100:3). Because God made us, we belong to Him and are accountable to Him.

2. God tells people what to do because He is the Lord

God has the right to command His creatures because He is the Lord who created us. His commands are not arbitrary; He knows what is best for us and calls us to walk in the way that leads to righteousness and blessing. “I am the LORD thy God, … which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go” (Isaiah 48:17).

God’s Word gives wise direction for our lives. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6). Obeying God is an expression of faith in His wisdom and goodness.

3. God kept His promise that sin would bring death and displeasure

In the garden of Eden, God warned Adam that disobedience would bring death: “For in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). When Adam sinned, sin and its consequences entered human experience. The fall brought separation from God, sorrow, corruption, and death.

God’s warning proved true, just as His Word always does. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). Scripture also declares, “The wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). The pain and displeasure associated with sin are reminders that rebellion against our Creator has serious consequences.

4. God offers fallen mankind salvation by grace through faith alone

Although all people are sinners and cannot save themselves by their works, God offers salvation as a gift through Jesus Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Salvation is received by faith, not earned by human merit.

Christ died for our sins and rose again, providing the only sufficient basis for forgiveness and reconciliation with God. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). Those who trust in Christ are justified by faith and receive peace with God (Romans 5:1).

5. God alone has appointed the future

The future is not outside God’s knowledge or control. He declares what will come and works according to His purpose. “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10). No person can appoint or control the future independently of God.

For the believer, God’s appointed future includes eternal life with Him. Jesus promised, “And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28). Revelation 21:3 gives this hope: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

These truths show us that God is our Creator, wise Lord, righteous Judge, gracious Saviour, and sovereign King. We should therefore humble ourselves before Him, trust His Word, and receive the salvation He freely offers through faith in Jesus Christ. The God who made us and governs the future is also able to keep His promises to all who belong to Him.
