Understanding Salvation
“Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” — John 9:35-38 (KJV)

The Gospel
Every person has sinned and fallen short of God’s holiness — “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) — and the penalty for that sin is death, both physical and eternal separation from God: “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). But God, moved by love, sent His Son Jesus Christ — sinless, fully God and fully man — to pay that penalty in our place, dying on the cross and rising bodily from the grave on the third day: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This salvation is not earned by works; it is received simply by believing — trusting that Jesus died for your sins and rose again: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Anyone who believes on Him is forgiven and given the promise of eternal life: “For whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
